Greetings! Thanks for stopping by. I have lots to say…
Phun Phact: Given the results of my latest diet it is quite likely that if I were to journey into outer space aboard the Space Shuttle and achieve “zero gravity”, I still wouldn’t float.
Sports: LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers staved off elimination in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals last night by defeating the Orlando Magic 112-102. King James had a hand in all of his team’s 32 fourth quarter points. Unless the Cavs can get more consistent non-LeBroncentric scoring from the four other guys on the floor, I predict the Magic will advance.
Meanwhile, Jim Dyar and I are hanging on tight to the rollercoaster ride that is the Lakers-Nuggets series. The Lakers could close things out tonight in Denver, but with the way these games have gone there’s no reason to believe that will happen. I think we should brace ourselves for a Game 7.
In baseball, my Dodgers continue to maintain the best record in either league even without suspended slugger, Manny Ramirez. Juan Pierre who is getting a chance to play in Manny’s absence is sparking the offense and is currently batting .409! What happens on July 3rd when Ramirez is set to return? There’s no DH (thank goodness) in the National League. Joe Torre will have a tough decision to make.
Bay Area teams continue to muddle along. The Giants are hovering around the .500 mark and appear to be settling in for a summer of mediocrity. Believe it or not, I prefer when the Giants are more competitive. It adds some spice to the Dodger-Giant rivalry when the teams are neck and neck in the pennant race. As it is, the race is more neck and vapor trail.
The Oakland Athletics are starting to show some signs of life as the offense starts to wake-up. I don’t know if they have enough to compete for a playoff berth, but at least they’re becoming more fun to watch. The addition of Adam Kennedy at second base has been a pleasant surprise.
Other Stuff: On behalf of Benita Epstein and myself I’d like to thank the local chapter of the American Association of University Women for hosting a lovely lunch for us at Tapas Downtown. The artists at AAUW invite the ArtHop artist(s) who show at Tapas each month to lunch where they chat about art in our community. Brad and Christine of Tapas graciously provide fantastic food as well as a terrific space to house the art. Thanks to all, I had a wonderful time.
Speaking of ArtHop, I was going through my sketchbook and noticed that I was still in possession of one of the improvised cartoons ordered at the most recent Hop. A friend requested a cartoon showing President Obama nominating our own Steve Brewer to a seat on the Supreme Court. The fanciful concept is one I would never have come up with myself (the idea is too frightening) but here’s what I ended up doing when put on the spot:
Hey, it was late. I was tired. Obviously I could have done better. I mean, even the generous soul who made a donation to the Women’s Refuge for the cartoon walked off without their prize. Can’t say as I blame them, though sometimes it’s the subject matter that fails you.
Well Kids, remember, a man can be a wimp, but a wimp can’t be a man. Or so says the folks at Stiff Records. Now go read something good. Doni and Kelly have a new “Dish”.
