Corner Booth: How Now Brown Bag

Got some brown paper grocery sacks lying around the house? Donate ’em to the Shasta Senior Nutrition Food Bank.

The food bank goes through more than 5,000 bags a month as it provides about 200,000 pounds of food to people throughout Shasta County. Recipients bring bags, but the food bank always needs more. To donate bags, drop them off at the food bank at 100 Mercy Oaks Drive in Redding between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Groups interested in doing brown bag drives should call Debbie McClung at 246-3060. The food bank program will pick up the bags when quantities exceed 1,000.

  • Mystery of the week: Down in La Jolla, an elaborately painted fiberglass cow that is part of an art project reappeared this week after being stolen from a sidewalk a month earlier. The life-sized, 100-pound cow, one of 40 in the Cowparade project, is scheduled to be auctioned off July 11 to benefit local charities. For full story (with photo), click here.
  • Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 6, for National Trails Day, when folks will turn out in Burney to clean and repair a section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the Burney Falls Trail Resort on Highway 89, just north of the junction with Highway 299. Afterward, workers get a free barbecue. For more information, call 335-6700.
  • A typical exchange at our house:
  • Kelly (cooling off after slaving in the yard): I guess I’m the only one who can see the weeds that need pulling.

    Me: We have weeds?
