Last minute New Year’s Eve

For a long time, I’ve heard New Year’s Eve described as “Amateur Night.” The term insinuates that those who are “experts” at going out and drinking and driving do it on nights other than Dec. 31 because the police are out in large numbers.

Now how troublesome is that? A person should never go out, get hammered and drive.

Tonight’s not a bad night to stay home.

However, if you and your designated driver were contemplating a last-minute dash out somewhere, here’s a couple things I’ve heard of:

• North Star Brewery has three bands playing tonight (not sure which bands, I’ll update if I discover).

• The always popular Johnny’s Cathouse has live music by the Redding rock band Turning Point.

• The Three Shastas Bar at the Red Lion Inn has party favors and reserved tables with live music by Gunshy. Call 221-8700. Individual tickets are $20.

• Win-River Casino has a $50 dinner/dance party option with the band The Basix. That band has been extremely popular at Win-River.

In general, I’ve seen a trend toward more private parties and less business-hosted events on New Year’s in the north state. People have become wary of the evening and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Just in case you haven’t noticed, on the events page here at A News Cafe (scroll down) are several links to area clubs and music venues. This is a good resource to find out what’s happening in terms of live music. Check it out, and if you know of other venues which regularly update their Web sites, let us know.

While you’re at it, it’s very easy to post an event on our online calendar, linked on our events page.
