What: Free City pill-collection event helps protect waterways

When: Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Oct. 7-9), 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: 2255 Abernathy Lane in Redding

For the third year in a row, Redding-area residents can dispose of old medications safely and for free during a “No Drugs Down the Drain” collection event October 7-9 at the City Hazardous Waste Facility.

All non-controlled pharmaceuticals will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the event at 2255 Abernathy Lane in Redding. Pills should be emptied into an envelope or bag that can be easily emptied into City disposal bins. Empty pill containers can then be disposed of in home trash or recycle bins as appropriate. No inhalers will be accepted.

The event is part of a statewide public awareness effort to encourage citizens to dispose of old medications safely and particularly not to put them down the drain. Such improper disposal can lead to pharmaceuticals entering water supplies and the environment where they can affect fish and wildlife. In addition, proper disposal prevents medications from getting into the hands of children and teens for whom they were not prescribed. The City has offered the service since 2008 and added a free collection on Earth Day this year, also.

Medications collected at the Redding location will be deposited into a locked collection bin and collected and incinerated by a licensed company.
