Tofu and tattoos: Possible downtown Redding neighbors?
By Doni Greenberg

Hopeful news for downtown Redding appeared on the window of the vacant building that once held Cheesecakes Unlimited on Market Street.

As you might recall, the Market Street Cheesecakes (not to be confused with the East Cypress Avenue Cheesecakes) closed in February.

I’m still bummed about that.  Ever since it served its first salad there in 1991, it was among my favorite downtown Redding restaurants. There, I was a one-trick pony who had a predictable order: Half a smoked salmon salad. No cheesecake. (I wanted it, of course.)

Before Cheesecakes, Maxwell’s restaurant filled a tiny portion of that space. Before that, I don’t remember what was there.

Back to the message on the Sherven Square window, brought to us by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control:

Public Notice of Application for Ownership Change.  Applicant: Peterson, Nathan & York, William. License: On-sale Beer and Wine Eating Place. Name: The Downtown Eatery.”

The remaining pertinent information included the address (1344 Market St.) and a circle around “transfer to new owner” regarding the type of application for which York and Peterson filed.

York and Peterson are 30-something friends and business partners who’ve embraced downtown Redding’s revitalization.

In 2004 they opened Nathan’s Anthems Tattoos & Piercings on the corner of Tehama and Market streets in the historic Sherven Square building that Peterson’s family owns.

Now it seems York and Peterson have started the ball rolling to open another downtown Redding Sherven Square business, just a few doors down from their tattoo and piercing enterprise.

I stopped by Nathan’s this morning to learn more, but “Billy” York, who manages the business, wasn’t in. Later I sent an e-mail to Nathan’s with a slew of questions. As of 9:30 last night, I hadn’t heard back.

However, a few business people who work in the Sherven Square area shared what they’d heard about The Downtown Eatery. They said The Downtown Eatery might lean toward organic, vegetarian fare. They said it might feature music in the evenings.

Mainly, we don’t know much.

When will it open? What about the menu’s price range?

Will it serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, or some combination of the three?

What are its expected hours and days of operation?

We’ll have to wait and see for ourselves.
