On Thursday, February 22, 2024, at approximately 9:00 AM, deputies with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of the Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle Area for of a report that rocks and debris had broken away from a hillside, near a drainage culvert leading toward the river. Two juveniles who were caught in the debris, had fallen down the hillside. This area is located downstream from Shasta Dam and at the request of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, water releases from Shasta Dam were temporarily reduced by the Bureau of Reclamation to aid in the recovery effort.
Both juveniles were found in the debris and had suffered injuries during the fall, and they were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Members of the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team, Dive Team, Boating Safety Unit and multiple allied agency resources responded to the scene to aid in the recovery ofthe victims. Once recovered, the victims were transported to the Shasta County Coroner’s Office where post-mortem examinations will be performed. The names of the juveniles are not being released at this time.
Further investigations into this event will be conducted by the agencies involved.
