Shasta College Workshop on How to Keep Landscaping “Green” During a Hot Redding Summer

Fall is here with cooler days and the start of some much-needed wet weather, but now is also the perfect time for homeowners to prepare their landscaping for next summer’s water restrictions. To help with that effort the Shasta College Horticulture Program and the Shasta Master Gardeners are holding a workshop on how to keep residential landscaping alive in times of severe water restrictions. The workshop will be Saturday, November 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in room 4000 on the Shasta College Farm. The workshop is free and open to the public. Sign-ups are not required in advance.

Participants will learn about ways to cut water use in existing landscapes and best practices for irrigating trees including how to build an effective tree ring. Techniques for retaining moisture in landscape soils and the latest information on how to schedule irrigation during times of limited water resources will also be shared. A demonstration will be given for those considering how to economically convert an automated sprinkler system to a drip system.

For questions regarding the event, contact Leimone Waite at (530) 242-2210 or lwaite@shastacollege.edu. This event is sponsored by Shasta Master Gardeners, Shasta County Cooperative Extension, Bella Vista Water District, and Shasta College.
