William B. ‘Bernie’ Baker: 8/22/1947 -10/5/2022 – Beloved ‘Musicians’ Musician’, Community Treasure

William B. “Bernie” Baker died at his home October 5, surrounded by his family. He was the long-time owner of Bernie’s Guitar in Redding and a highly regarded musician and mentor, “a musician’s musician.”

In his early teens, the Tennessee native developed a passion for guitar. His model was Chet Atkins, manager of RCA studios in Nashville, whose playing style had become nationally known in the 1960s. Bernie worked at a local music shop during his high school years, giving guitar lessons and developing skills as a piano tuner. He came to California in the early 1970s following service in the United States Navy where he was stationed at Guantanamo, Cuba as a member of the military band.

In 1973 he opened Bernie’s Guitar Shop, featuring selections of string, brass and keyboard instruments. In addition, the shop offered studio lessons. During his career, he played with numerous jazz and bluegrass groups including Sax Therapy, Roma, North State Big Band, Brazilectro, “Dick, Bernie and Bruce” and often accompanied singer Stephanie Foos. For many musicians, he was regarded as a source of support, encouragement, and a father figure.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jorgi Oliver Baker, and two daughters, Chelsea Baker (Brennem) Miller and Mindy Quiroz and six grandchildren. Survivors in Tennessee include two sisters, Carol Baker, Melanie Baker (Randall) Ford and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Carl H. Baker, his brother, Carl H. Baker, Jr., and a nephew, Jeffrey K. Baker.

The family thanks the staff of Dignity Health at Mercy Hospice, Dr. David Short and numerous friends, and family for their support during this journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to:
Shasta County Arts Council 1313 Market St., Redding, CA 96001
Redding Piano Angels, 10609 Old Oregon Trail, Redding, CA 96003

A celebration of Bernie’s life will be held at Old City Hall on Friday, October 28th from 5 p.m.-7 p.m.
