SCSO Responds to Report of Explosives in Cottonwood

On Monday, March 21, 2022, at 1406 hours, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for service involving possible explosives. The items were discovered near a residence in the 3500 Block of Rancho Estates Road Cottonwood, California.

Shasta County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the scene along with a Bomb Technician from the Redding Police Department. The investigating personnel determined the items were explosives; therefore, additional resources from allied agencies were requested to render the explosives safe.

Due to the proximity of North Cottonwood School, a brief lockdown was instituted out of an abundance of cation.; however, the students were able to leave campus safely. Portions of Gas Point Road, Rancho Estates Road, and Shirley Street were closed during the investigation to protect citizens and motorists in the area. All the roads were reopened after the explosives were rendered safe. No emergency personnel or citizens were injured during the incident and no structures were damaged.

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Redding Police Department, Butte County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, Cottonwood Fire, and Shasta County Public Works personnel for their assistance during this incident. This matter will remain under investigation by Sheriff’s Office personnel.
