Shasta College Hosts Talk By Pioneering Educator Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole

The Shasta College Foundation Community Speaker Series proudly hosts a talk by accomplished educator, museum professional, advocate, and author Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole via online webinar on April 22, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Cole will draw on her remarkable and historic career to provide an engaging evaluation of the case for diversity and inclusion in American higher education. Dr. Cole has pioneered many firsts: she was the first African American female President of Spelman College, the first African American to serve as the Chair of the Board of United Way of America, the first woman appointed to the board of Coca Cola Enterprises, and the only person to serve as the president of both historically black colleges for women in the United States.

Dr. Cole additionally served as the Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art for eight years. She is currently a Senior Consulting Fellow at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and a Principal Consultant with Cook Ross, Inc. Dr. Cole is also a fellow of the American Anthropological Association and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She has authored and edited several books and numerous articles for scholarly and general audiences and is the recipient of multiple awards and 69 honorary degrees. Notably, Dr. Cole is the current Chair of the National Council of Negro Women, an advocacy organization with more than 2 million members focusing on women’s rights, civil rights, and education.

This event is part of the Community Speaker Series, a joint effort by the Shasta College Foundation, The McConnell Foundation, and the Women’s Fund of the Shasta Regional Community Foundation. The Community Speaker Series mission is to bring a diverse group of speakers to northern California who will inspire, excite and challenge the community with fresh ideas and perspectives on education, society, the arts, and our environment.
