On Monday, May 4, 2020, the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and the Dive Team, including our Search and Rescue Volunteer Dive Team, resumed the search for a 31-year-old male from Anderson, CA. The male disappeared the day before while trying to swim across the Sacramento River from the Anderson River Park.
The Sacramento River is very cold, the water is fast moving, and there are obstacles under the surface making diving more dangerous. The Divers worked together to search underneath the surface of the river, in an attempt to locate the missing person. At 1045 hours, the Dive Team located an adult male on the riverbed south of where he was last seen the day before. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel and was turned over to the Shasta County Coroner’s Office.
The decedent has been positively identified as 31 year old Michael Kenneth Erickson of Anderson, California. The decedent’s next-of-kin has been notified and a postmortem examination will be scheduled.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to encourage the public recreating on waterways in Shasta County to wear a life jacket. A special thank you to our Search and Rescue Volunteers for all the time you give to the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Shasta County year after year.
On Sunday, 5/03/2020 at approximately 1408 hours, SHASCOM received a report of a water rescue on the Sacramento River near the Anderson River Park. Officers from the Anderson Police Department, Cal Fire, Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and Dive Team and the California Highway Patrol Air Operations responded to the scene.
It was reported a 31-year-old male from Anderson entered the Sacramento River from Anderson River Park. The male tried to swim to the opposite shoreline of the river to get to his friend. The friend was on the opposite shore due to the Jet Ski he was riding had mechanical issues.
The water in the Sacramento River is fast moving and very cold. The male who was swimming across the river was approximately half way, when he began to go under the water’s surface. When he came back, he yelled for help. He went up and down, a few more times before he was not seen resurfacing. A drift boat in the area tried to get to the man, but was unable to before he went under water and disappeared.
The Anderson Police Department, Cal Fire, the California Highway Patrol Air Operations, and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and Dive Team searched for the man along the shorelines and in the water. The man has not been located.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit and Dive Team will resume searching for the man tomorrow. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people recreating in and around water to wear a life jacket.
