Shasta College Health Information Management Baccalaureate Degree Program Receives CAHIIM Accreditation

Shasta College has received official notification from the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) that it has been awarded initial accreditation for its Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management (HIM) degree program. The comprehensive review recognized the program for its substantial compliance with the nationally established CAHIIM accreditation standards.

“I am incredibly proud of the efforts of our dedicated faculty and staff as they have worked tirelessly to design, develop, and implement our online bachelor’s degree program,” stated Dr. Joe Wyse, Superintendent/President of Shasta College. “This program will provide our students with the higher education our industry partners told us they needed for health information professionals in this community and around the state. Shasta College continues to lead the way with innovative, flexible programs like our online HIM bachelor’s degree, which offers working adults flexible, affordable solutions to move their career to the next level,” said Wyse.

Students’ benefit knowing that they are enrolling in a quality program, and employers of health information management professionals gain the assurance that by hiring a graduate of a CAHIIM accredited program they can expect the graduate to possess the required entry-level knowledge and skills. CAHIIM is the globally recognized and trusted accreditation organization for Health Informatics and Health Information Management education programs to ensure the development of a workforce that meets the challenge of an information-intensive environment.

“CAHIIM accreditation means that Shasta College students are now eligible to sit for the national certification examination and become credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA),” noted Andrew Dowgiert, HIM Program Director. “The RHIA credential is required for many high level positions in the field of health information management. When a program is accredited by CAHIIM it means that it has voluntarily undergone a rigorous review process and has been determined to meet or exceed the Standards set by their Board of Directors. Accreditation is a mechanism for assuring academic quality in higher education,” stated Dowgiert.
