Shasta College is excited to announce a new Worksite Learning Program– FIRST SEAT (Forest Industry Real-World Skills Training/Sustaining Employment & Applying Technology). This program provides training to students in Shasta College’s Heavy Equipment Operation Program on specialized logging equipment and exposes them to career opportunities in the logging industry. FIRST SEAT is the successful result of the close partnership developed between the College and industry partners including Sierra Pacific Industries, Del Logging, Inc., Creekside Logging, Pape Machinery, Sierra Cascade Logging Conference, Peterson Timber, and two industry associations– the Loggers Association of Northern CA and Associated California Loggers.
On May 17th at 11:15am representatives from Sierra Pacific Industries will present the college with a check for $20,000 towards the FIRST SEAT program in front of a brand new, state-of-the-art John Deere 848-L Grapple Skidder that will be utilized by Shasta College’s Heavy Equipment Operation Program.
“The FIRST SEAT worksite learning model provides students an unprecedented hands-on opportunity to learn the skills they need from experts in the industry on state-of-the-art equipment such as the brand-new John Deere 848-L Grapple Skidder.” said Susan Wyche, Division Dean for Business, Agriculture, Industry, Technology and Safety (BAITS). “The FIRST SEAT program at Shasta College will provide the type of skilled and certificated professionals our industry partners need and that will lead to sustainable employment for our graduates in the high-growth forestry industry.” Wyche said conclusively.
Sierra Pacific Industry’s Kristy Lanham, North Sierra Community Relations Manager, commented on the new FIRST SEAT program, “This collaboration between Shasta College and the forest products and timber industry will bring invaluable opportunities to the region. The FIRST SEAT Program will increase opportunities for students and industry partners to connect, position the College as a hub for worksite learning in the sustainable forest products industry, while supporting job growth throughout our rural communities.” concluded Lanham.
Shasta College is offering the FIRST SEAT program beginning in the Fall 2019. The new Worksite Learning Program combines heavy equipment training with additional coursework in forest operations and natural resources. This new certificate will work in concert with recently awarded grant funding that will provide additional staffing and forestry-related heavy equipment. Young adults who possess the desire to work outdoors and embody a strong work ethic, combined with the skillsets taught through Shasta College’s program will find rich and rewarding employment in the forest products industry.
