Shasta College proudly announces its 69th Annual Commencement ceremony, which will take place on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the Shasta College Memorial Stadium (football field). To date, Shasta College has received 1,424 applications for diplomas, 332 applications for certificates, and close to 800 graduates who have indicated they plan to attend the commencement ceremony. Shasta College also proudly recognizes the 342 graduates with honors (3.5 GPA or higher) and 53 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK- National Honor Society) graduates. As a point of reference, in 2018 Shasta College had 1,234 degree applications and 626 students attending commencement, 354 graduates with honors, and 73 PTK graduates.
Shasta College Student Senate President, Isabella Elizarraras, will present the class and Superintendent/President, Dr. Joe Wyse, will give the welcoming address. Flag bearers will be Ron Van Orden, Classified Employee of the Year, James Crockett, Excellent Educator of the Year (Part-time Faculty) and Lorraine Haas, Excellent Educator of the Year (Full-time Faculty).
Dr. Francisco Rodriguez, Chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District, is this year’s commencement speaker. Born and raised in San Francisco, Dr. Rodriguez attended the University of California, Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Chicano studies and his master’s degree in community development. He received his Ph.D. in education from Oregon State University. The Los Angeles Community College District is the largest community college district in the nation with nine, accredited colleges, over 250,000 students enrolled, and an annual budget of $5.8 billion.
Having received numerous awards and recognitions from local, state and national organizations for his servant leadership and dedicated service, Dr. Rodriguez is a first-generation, English-language learner, and proud son of immigrant factory workers. He credits his parents for instilling a strong work ethic and a tuned moral compass.
