Shasta County residents have a new chance to assist Carr Fire families who have lost everything. The CARR (Caring About Redding Residents) Furnishings project, is made up of local volunteers that connect gently used furniture families affected by the Carr Fire in need of furniture and décor as they transition into new housing.
Viva Downtown Redding is acting as fiscal and administrative sponsor of the group which is housed in the Market Street Promenade, at 1419 Yuba Street, next to the Post Office Saloon in Downtown Redding.
Volunteer and Lead Project Organizer Tess Woodford reports there are currently many needs for gently used furniture. “Items are going out as quickly as they are coming in,” Woodford said. “We are finding that fire victims need everything,” Woodford said.
Woodford said the Furnishings project is looking for gently used small sofas, love seats, desks, futons, kitchen tables, chairs, dressers, bedroom furniture, coffee tables, throw rugs and décor items. “With the generous support of our community CARR Furnishings is offering furniture at no charge to fire victims with proof of address.” Woodford said.
Viva Downtown Board Member Naomi Yamamoto helped arrange to have the furnishing project brought to a space downtown. “We saw that there was going to be a big need in our community as people moved in to new spaces, and we also know that many people have items that they are not currently using. So it just made sense to bring these two things together.” Yamamoto said.
Donors can bring furnishings to the Market Street Promenade location though the California Street alley on the east side of the California Street Parking Structure. The location is currently open to the public during the following days and times:
Tuesdays between 8 a.m. and 2:30 pm; Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 2:30 pm; and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Special appointments are available depending on need.
Those interested can follow the project at ‘CARR Furnishings’ on Facebook. More information can be obtained by calling Tess Woodford at (530) 410-5845.
