Carr Fire Stories: House Saved by Two Men, One Holey Hose

Man, I am thankful for this hose. It literally saved my house.

A very special hose.

For those of you who don’t know the story, here goes. I got a call late Thursday that my neighbor’s house across the street burned down.

I was hoping the text I received was a joke. Nope. The next text I got was from Chet Sunde and Ken Tyler saying that all my neighbors’ houses were burning down, and mine was trying to be saved.

Some homes in Mike Mojarro’s neighborhood were destroyed.

Another neighbor who was checking on their house a few doors down also called and said man your house is next to an inferno and might be next.

After a quick discussion with the wife, I decided to drive as close to my house as I could considering the road blocks, and ran to my house.

When I got there Mike Borges, of Borges Law Office, was literally hosing down my house.

As I ran up, Mike turned off the hose, and a bad-ass Redding firefighter said,”Is this your house?” I replied yes. He asked, “Want to play fireman?” My answer was, “Yes, sir!”

He said, “I have a hose, but no more men.”

He handed me the hose, and Mike Borges and I took turns until morning keeping the fire (4 ft. away) from taking my house.

Around 5 a.m. the firefighter said he needed my (his) hose. I said OK, and I grabbed my garden hose to continue fire suppression. As he started to grab his hose he noticed it had several holes in it, and he tossed it on my grass.

Long story short, this hose is the reason my house is still standing. Needless to say, this is now my hose.

Note: Mike Mojarro’s home survived, but has significant smoke and water damage. Here is a photo of Mike’s Sunset Terrace home before the Carr Fire.
