On July 19, 2018 at 1:56 a.m., officers of the Redding Police Department were dispatched to Rancho Road and Alta Mesa Drive for a solo vehicle traffic collision. The driver, Joseph Sharpe, 24 years of Redding, was attempting to leave the scene on foot. He was detained a short distance from the collision.
The investigation showed Sharpe was traveling southbound on Alta Mesa Drive and failed to stop at the stop sign. His vehicle, a 1996 Honda Accord, collided with a rock wall of a residence on Rancho Road. The passenger in his vehicle, Dena Bommarito, 19 years of Redding, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Medical Center. Both Sharpe and Bommarito were wearing seatbelts during the collision.
Sharp is currently on probation for a prior DUI and had a suspended license. He provided false information to officers at the scene, denying being the driver and threatened to physically harm one of the officers. Several witnesses and Bommarito confirmed Sharpe was the driver of the car.
Sharp was evaluated by a D.U.I. Specialist and determined to be operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and cannabis. He was arrested for felony D.U.I. causing injury, felony hit and run, making threats to an officer, providing false information, a violation of probation, and driving on a suspended license causing injury.
