AAUW Redding Branch to Send Local Girls to AAUW ‘Tech Trek’ Camp at UC Davis

The Redding Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will be sending 3-4 local middle school girls to the AAUW 2018 Tech Trek camp at UC Davis this summer, July 22-28, 2018. The potential camp scholarship recipients (3 for sure, 4 if the impacted program has a cancellation) are Aubrey James, Jayden Stewart, Skylie Stewart, and Ruby Gonzales – all 7th graders from Anderson Middle School.

The camp scholarship recipients are chosen based on teacher recommendation, submission of a 400-word essay, an application form and an interview with the local AAUW Tech Trek Committee (out of the AAUW Redding Branch). AAUW Redding has been sending girls to this camp since 1998, and covers most of the $900 tuition for each girl. The girls’ families are asked to pay just $50. Girls are chosen from alternate schools in the Redding and surrounding area each year – schools that also send girls to the AAUW Redding “Women in STEM” conference held in the Spring.

AAUW’s Annual Tech Trek Math & Science Camp at UC Davis

The AAUW Tech Trek is a STEM (science/math/engineering/technology) camp that the California State AAUW designed to help 7th grade girls continue their interests in learning more about the growing number of promising careers in STEM fields — in which women are currently under-represented. The 7-day camp features hands-on activities, and helps to increase girls’ confidence in working with STEM-related projects. All AAUW Tech Trek camps in California are located on university campuses.
