March For Our Lives, Redding

Matt Grigsby
Matt Grigsby was born and raised in Redding but has often felt he should have been born in Italy. By day he's a computer analyst toiling for the public good and by night he searches airline websites for great travel deals. His interests include books, movies, prowling thrift shops for treasure and tricking his friends into cooking for him. One day he hopes to complete his quest in finding the best gelato shop in Italy.

Looks like a good turnout! The kids are giving me hope, they really are…

They give me hope too. Their speeches were passionate and articulate and there was a ton of energy from the crowd!

If Democrats want to increase their vote in November, they need better tactics than this. Young people will always be liberal.

Democrats should run a better candidate for the House, based on improving the quality of life in the area. Voters are well aware of the quality of life in Humboldt county and have seen what commercial pot growing does to a community. Many voters have seen heavy daily pot users in the workplace, neighborhood and family. Many voters have seen the kind of people commercial pot growing attracts to the region and the costs.

Wow, Conservative, you must really hate Redding as it seems all you do is post what’s wrong with it. “Young people will always be liberal” where did you dig up that gem? Obviously you haven’t been to Trinity County or Wyoming or Arizona or….

    • Avatar Matt Grigsby says:

The GOP is driving this response, and their policies are what are going to flip the House in November. These young people are angry, frustrated and ready to change the world and I support them 100%.

I’m not sure what any of this has to do with pot growing.

    • Avatar Marc Carter says:

Conservative, It appears your aversion to pot growing and “young people” are about equal… and “Liberal” is the common denominator. Good luck with that in November.

The kids are such an inspiration! This is what democracy and the future looks like. All the speakers at the Redding march were articulate, passionate and intelligently made their case for people still on the fence about reasonable and sane gun law and policy. They are not taking the ‘Don’t tread on me’ and your “Violating my Constitutional rights” nonsense the NRA and politicians like laMalfa dish out any longer. Although the kids say this is not a right or left issue, it’s very clear the NRA has been a long standing driving force in the hard right conservative world to a point many conservative politicians are afraid to even discuss reasonable and sane gun policy and the kids know this very well. Yes, the youths are indeed calling for all kids and adults to register and “Vote Them out” if they can’t. So, I guess their “November vote” is indeed a’Blue Wave’ worry for conservatives as they and Trump seen hard fixed on their stance. It is indeed very refreshing to see the kids take this issue into our cultural awareness in the numbers they have but so depressing we have seen so many kids die as collateral damage in the NRA cultural war.

I didn’t march but instead stayed behind and talked with the 5 or 6 folks that came out to counter protest. Here is the thing, often both sides walk past each other without talking and trying to see if and where the common ground is. I think it’s fear. The kids are literally afraid of violence and being killed and afraid the adults aren’t going to and don’t do anything about this. The God Guts and Guns folks expressed to me yesterday evening their fear about their Constitutional rights being taken away, about immigrants, about schools not teaching Christian values and how to use guns in our schools, about increases in a woman’s right to choose and about how feminism is eroding our society in general. At the beginning of our conversation, they tried to tell me the AR 15 was designed for hunting…. We quickly got past that as they saw Im not that naive and had a good conversation after that. So, the whole NRA hard right conservative war is really about much more, guns are really their main dog whistle. Clearly, they are also afraid when they see these kids stand up and say, enough is enough. We have a very divided nation and one side is shrinking, the other side growing…. it is looking kind of like a Blue Wave.

    • Avatar Matt Grigsby says:

Beautifully stated. I welcome this Blue Wave and am so proud of the movement started by these young people. Hard to believe six weeks ago they were worried about tests and prom and who liked who. Now they’re on the cover of Time Magazine.

    • Avatar K. Beck says:

      Great coverage, Matt! Thanks.

“The God Guts and Guns folks expressed to me yesterday evening their fear about their Constitutional rights being taken away, about immigrants, about schools not teaching Christian values and how to use guns in our schools, about increases in a woman’s right to choose and about how feminism is eroding our society in general.”

How are any of these stances a picture of “American values” and/or principles established in the Constitution? All of them have the right to not talk to anyone they think is a dreaded “feminist,” go to any church they choose (especially in Redding!), send their kids to a Christian school, or home “educate” them; the rest of us have a right to send our children to a school without any religious indoctrination, and without fear of being murdered in their classroom or on their school campus. They are free to do whatever they want within the law, just like the rest of us. Don’t like abortion? Don’t get one. Pretty easily done since every time I see people protesting at Women’s Health Specialists they are always old white men!

As an aside, not all religions believe life starts at fertilization. That is a Christian belief. And, whose life has priority? A fertilized egg or a real live human being, i.e.: the pregnant woman, in case anyone wonders who I am referring to here.

      IRT the dreaded “immigrants:”

Where, exactly, did all those white folks come from? They are most definitely NOT Native Americans.

If you really want to stop illegal immigration, especially if you are worried about immigrants from Mexico, the solution is really simple: STOP hiring them. Fine (big fines) all those ag folks (yes, even you Doug LaMalfa), home builders, hotels, & restaurants (how many illegals do you suppose work for Trump, Inc.?) who hire them. If you hire them, they will come. Big business runs that show, go after THEM. Forget about wasting all that tax payer money on a wall, it isn’t how I want my taxes spent.

Refugees coming from war torn countries (many of whom the US (WE are) is responsible for bombing into oblivion) deserve to have a life free from terror, especially US sponsored terror. The Syrians are at the top of that list in my mind.

      Bottom Line:

Your “rights” end at my front door. I am not telling them they cannot do all those things they find required for their “life, liberty, & pursuit of happiness,” however, they certainly do NOT have the right to force THEIR views down MY throat!

Change comes slowly. Hang in there you kids. You CAN make change, it just won’t happen overnight.

OK. I am off the soap box. I have real things I need to get done today.

Nicely done! An important event, well documented.

  5. Avatar conservative says:

The Democrats could actually lose ground in the first congressional district in November. After 60 lives were lost in the wildfires and mudslides in 2017, the Democrats in Sacramento have done nothing effective.

Soft on crime, homelessness, drug culture, pension crisis, capital flight, etc mean the Democrats have no path to victory in this district. Young people’s passion for the global warming tactic didn’t work, if anything it backfired.

    • Avatar Matt Grigsby says:

I don’t expect we’ll be able to flip this district blue in November. It ultimately won’t matter because there are enough other districts across the country that will flip. Change is a-comin’.

      • Avatar Common Sense says:

Indeed Matt!….that small wave….its been growing…..and it will take out everyone on the beach without warning….change is coming….perhaps not overnight….but it’s coming….we are only 1 Generation away from some Real Change…..
