Big Changes coming to Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp, More at Turtle Bay

BABES-PLAN-&-SKETCH-March2017-MG

Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp, the Mill Building, and the Butterfly House at Turtle Bay Exploration Park will soon undergo a major facelift thanks to recent contributions from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment, the KBK Foundation, the Ben B. Cheney Foundation, and our loyal members and guests. The major changes coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the park and are a direct result of the feedback received from guests and members during the creation of the 2015 Turtle Bay Exploration Park Strategic Plan.

As early as Summer 2017, the construction of two brand new playground areas in Paul Bunyan’s Forest Camp will be underway. Babe’s Corral will be an area for children ages 0-5 and will feature a toddler par-course, an osprey nest slide, and swings. Additionally, pending final funding, the new High Climbers Adventure area for big kids will include a rope tower and slide, a long and low-flying zipline, a slackline, and a rock bouldering wall. New shade sails have just been added over the amphitheater to provide a cooler climate for animal programs.

The Mill Building, a guest favorite since Turtle Bay’s opening, will introduce all-new animal habitats as well as new forestry exhibits, including the new Smokejumper Interactive, a video motion simulator that reenacts what a firefighter sees when jumping out of a plane to extinguish a forest fire. This exhibit comes from the World Forestry Museum in Portland, OR.
