Redding Electric Utility (REU) will host the Redding Regional Science Bowl this Saturday, February 25, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., at Simpson University. The 2017 Regional Science Bowl will feature, for the first time, not only high school teams but middle school teams representing 30 schools featuring some 49 teams. These middle and high school teams represent Butte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lassen, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity counties.

The Redding Regional Science Bowl is a fiercely competitive question-and-answer contest between some of the brightest high school and middle school minds from schools throughout Northern California. The students will compete in answering extremely technical and challenging math, science, and technology questions. The winner from the middle school division and the winner from the high school division will each have the privilege of an all-expense paid trip to the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., April 27 through May 1, 2017.

An opening ceremony/pep rally and National Anthem will launch the competition at 8:00 a.m. in the gymnasium, followed by a “round robin” tournament from 9:00 a.m. until noon. The quarter-finals, semi-finals, and championship rounds will be held in the afternoon wrapping-up at 3:30 p.m. or shortly thereafter.

Barry Tippin, REU Director commented, “This year we opened up competition for the middle schools to compete. This allows the younger minds to get an early taste of how exciting this competition is and allows these younger students the opportunity to compete for several years at a higher level. This event really showcases how knowledgeable and brilliant our North State youth are. The Science Bowl is truly the “Super Bowl” for local area scholars; these kids really display incredible talent, sportsmanship, and put on quite an impressive show. We invite the community to come out and view one or two competitive rounds and support our future leaders!”

The Regional Science Bowl is a collaboration between many entities including North State STEM and College Options who have assisted in recruiting teams and volunteers. In addition, REU wishes to thank all those who co-sponsored with contributions and offered accommodations to house out-of-town competitors. Other long-term generous sponsors include: City of Shasta Lake, Lassen Municipal Utility District, Trinity Public Utilities District, CH2M Hill, Wallner Plumbing, Pepsi, Shasta Regional Medical Center, McConnell Foundation, Hilton Garden Inn, Red Lion Hotel, Simpson University, Pace Engineering, the U.S. Department of Energy, and REU – the host sponsor. The competition is open to the public and the media is encouraged to attend.
