Erase Library Fines With Canned Goods

canned-food

Beginning on Monday, October 31st and continuing through Monday, November 21st, all three branches of the Shasta Public Libraries (Anderson, Burney, and Redding) will be participating in the annual “Food for Fines” campaign. During this time, patrons can exchange one can of food for $1 off their library fines, up to $10 per customer. Year after year this has proven to be a great way for library users to support our community while getting something in return.

For library patrons without late fines who still want to be part of the giving, each library branch has a “Pay It Forward” box. Canned items, not used to pay fines, can still be donated and used to erase the fines of other patrons. Shasta Public Libraries hopes this will help to bring in more cans and surpass last year’s record of nearly 1,000 donated items.

Cans will be given to One SAFE Place – Sierra Center (Redding), Anderson Cottonwood Christian Assistance (Anderson), and Burney Food Co-Op (Burney) and used for holiday food distribution programs. Food not needed for holiday programs will be distributed throughout the year to the hungry in our community.

The Libraries can only accept canned foods; no damaged, expired or glass items. Donated cans cannot be used for lost or damaged books or for collection accounts.

To learn more about this event, please call the Redding Library at (530) 245-7250 or visit www.shastalibraries.org/FoodforFines.
