As the sun comes up on Saturday, July 30th, volunteers and kids from Shasta County will be gathering at the Redding Kohl’s store on Browning Street for Kohl’s Cares for Kids. Northern Valley Catholic Social Service, Inc. (NVCSS) and Kohl’s are partnering for the 8th year to provide back to school shopping for school-age children in need (Kindergarten – 5th grade). As the nonprofit partner, NVCSS raises money for the children to participate. This year, NVCSS and Kohl’s hope to help 100 children shop for back to school clothes! Budgets are tight for many families in our community. It may be unlikely that parents are able to provide their children with the excitement of shopping for new clothes.
Starting a new grade, and maybe even a new school, is tough enough for students. We don’t want these kids to feel noticeably different from their peers. Every child deserves to experience the boost of self-esteem that comes from wearing crisp, new clothes and bright shoes on the first day of school.
The ultimate goal of Kohl’s and NVCSS is to work together to help take the burden off of low-income families and to boost their child’s self confidence and allow them to focus on academics and learning. For every $150 dollars contributed, one more child gets to start the school year wearing new shoes and clothes.
This year, NVCSS is partnering with PrimeLending in Redding for a school supplies drive. Supplies can be dropped off at PrimeLending on Hemsted Drive or at KSHASTA radio station, through July 22. The school supplies will fill the backpacks donated by a local attorney. Each student will also receive a new dental hygiene bag provided by Ronald Mino, DDS.
