Shasta Lake Holiday Weekend Statistics

Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety Unit

This past 2016 Memorial Day weekend was a busy weekend on Shasta Lake. Young adults from University of Oregon, Oregon Institute of Technology, CSU Chico, UC Davis and UC San Luis Obispo, Stanford, along with general vacationers, converged on Shasta Lake to enjoy the three day weekend. An estimated 160 plus houseboats were rented out for the weekend. Up to 100 houseboats were concentrated on Slaughter House Island on the Sacramento Arm of Shasta Lake. These are the stats for 5-27-15 through 5-30-15:

Non-Boating alcohol related arrest: 5 (Minor in Possession Alcohol & Public Intox.)

Boating Under the Influence arrest: 6

Field Sobriety Tests administered: 64

Citations Issued for boating violations: 32

Warnings Issued for boating violations: 153

Vessels/Persons assisted: 262

Accident Reports & Investigations: 12

Medical Transports to medical centers: 7 (7 injuries, 6 alcohol related)

Deaths: 1 (Unknown, possible drowning)

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the S.A.F.E. Boat program, from the University of California Davis, for their assistance this past weekend. The S.A.F.E. Boat was stationed on Slaughter House Island. The S.A.F.E. Boat personnel are EMT’s and paramedics that handle minor injuries requiring medical attention. They assess patients and determine if they need to be transported to a medical center for further treatment. The S.A.F.E. Boat personnel handled hundreds of patients during the weekend. The Shasta County Fire boat, staffed by Cal-Fire & Shasta County Volunteer Fire personnel, were on Shasta Lake during the weekend with 24 hour staffing. The Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank Cal-Fire and the U.S. Forest Service for their assistance on Shasta Lake.
