Whiskeytown National Recreation Area’s “Birds, Bees, and Butterflies BioBlitz” begins on Friday, May 13th and will be based at the Whiskeytown Environmental School within the park.
The BioBlitz will kick-off Friday morning with elementary and high school students from local schools participating in a variety of activities, including a blitz of plants and bees, aquatic invertebrate sampling, butterfly identification, bird activities, and mosquito and tick identification. Art and creative writing activities will encourage personal expression of the experience through fresh eyes. Friday evening will include a “Friday the 13th Bat Chat” presented by Humboldt State University bat experts and will be open to the general public.
Families and members of the local community are invited to participate on Saturday, May 14th in our Biodiversity Festival. This will include bird walks hosted by the local chapter of the Audubon Society, a plant hike and aquatic invertebrate sampling with scientists from the Klamath Network Inventory and Monitoring Program, fungi identification with a mycologist from Shasta College, blitzes of bryophytes with the California Lichen Society, and butterflies and bees with professors from UC Davis. Artists and poets will be participating in this event and there will be a feather dance provided by the Local Indians For Education and music provided by the Jim Dyer Band. The event will wrap up around 3;00 pm on Saturday.
