Artists Paint Out! Competition at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area May 6, 7 & 8

The National Park Service working in partnership with the Friends of Whiskeytown and Redding Bank of Commerce is hosting a Paint Out! Competition at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area on May 6, 7, and 8, 2016. Plein Air Artists working in the medium of oil, water color, acrylics, pastels, charcoal and pencil are invited to participate. Each artist who would like to participate needs to have their own canvas or paper stamped on either Friday or Saturday (May 6 or 7) with the competition’s official stamp. Official stamping of canvas’s will be done at the park’s Visitor Center. Participating artists in the Paint Out! are allowed to camp free at Dry Creek Campground on May 6 and 7th. On Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. all completed art work will be displayed at the Park’s Visitor Center sidewalk patio. An official juror will select 1st place ($500), 2nd place ($200) and 3rd place ($100), plus special recognition for best work for a student artists under 18 years old.

Following the Art Competition awards, the participating art work will be open to public sale from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m. The general public is invited to review the work produced during the Paint Out! weekend and negotiate purchase price with the artists on hand for works that are available for sale.

40% of all sales will go to the Friends of Whiskeytown (501 C 3 not for profit) to support the park’s Artist in Residence Program. The Friends of Whiskeytown and the National Park Service have been hosting an Artist in Residence Program for the past 14 years, that attracts professional and talented artists from across the United States. Artists come to Whiskeytown and stay in the Artist’s Cabin for one to three weeks dedicated to plein air painting. With no distractions, artists are able to completely focus on their art work and produce beautiful paintings of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. This year, the Artist-in-Residence program is encouraging artist to produce paintings of people either enjoying Whiskeytown or people working in the park.

The Paint Out! competition cost $20 to enter and is open to all ages. Rules and regulations can be found on the park’s website <nps.gov/whis>.
