Shasta College Horticulture Department will offer an updated class in Landscape Design and a class on Organic Gardening for the Spring 2016 Semester.
AGEH 35 Landscape Design- Section number S2521 Instructor, Kirkwood Hale
Class will run from January 20th to May 18th, 2016 and be offered Mondays from 4:30-6:20 p.m. with lab on Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:20 p.m.
New for this year the class will emphasize energy savings in the landscape, especially water savings. This class teaches the student about design principles i.e. unity, rhythm, repetition, balance, etc. and then use them to create functional and pleasing landscapes with plant material and other landscape elements. Both hand drawing and computer landscape design will be taught. Class has a prerequisite of Plant Identification but if student has a working knowledge of plants they should contact Leimone Waite at (530) 242-2210 to sign up for the class.
AGEH 71 Organic Gardening– Section number S1034 Instructor, Molly Greenwood
Class is held Monday Nights from 5:00 to 6:50 p.m. from January 25 to May 16th, 2016
This class is an introduction to Organic Gardening. Students will be learn how to: prepare an Organic System Plan; about Organic Materials requirements; start plants from seeds and cuttings; prepare soil and planting beds, irrigate, compost, use organic pest and weed control and how to harvest and market crops. The class is very hands on and will utilize the certified organic greenhouse and garden.
The Agriculture Department will be offering Viticulture classes (AGVIT 80 and AGVIT 81) on Wednesday nights from 6:00 to 8:50 p.m. The classes will cover how to select and plant a vineyard, grape vine pruning, pest control, irrigation and much more. Both classes are very hands on and will utilize Shasta College’s and other local vineyards for training.
