Judith_Foosaner_Condor_(10x10)_#03-1

Judith Foosaner is known for her contemporary exploration of line, gesture, space and surface in a classic black and white. An exhibition of her Recent Works is on view August 17-September 24, 2015 in the Art Building (300). It is free and open to the public. The artist will offer a lecture (also free and open to the public) on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 11:00 am-12:00 pm in the Humanities Room (400). A reception with light refreshments will follow.

Judith Foosaner’s collages are initiated with expressive and gestural line drawings which are then cut into squares, mounted on canvas and painted with black acrylic. Linear elements evolve into bold and complex forms and compositions, both organic and geometric. Configurations swirl and dance across the surface. The fluidity and rhythm of the shapes create cohesive fields of black and white forms which reference text, music and hieroglyphics. In the oil paintings dark grey shapes rise against black grounds in lyrical and intriguing configurations.

Judith Foosaner has exhibited internationally and is in museum collections across the country. She studied with Elmer Bischoff, R.B. Kitaj and Mark Rothko at the University of California, Berkeley and she taught at the California College of Arts in Oakland/San Francisco, the University of California at Berkeley and Davis and the Wimbledon School of Art in London.
