This weekend, May 2nd and 3rd, 2015, Michelle Angela, Director and Rosemary Febbo, Project Manager, of the Veterans’ Garden Project of Butte, Glen and Tehama Counties, talked to us about the project and its 4th Annual Memorial Day Plant Give-away coming up on Monday May 25th, 2015.
U.S. VETERANS RECEIVE FREE GARDEN PLANTS Memorial Day – May 25, 2015
The diverse skills and abilities, plus impressive work ethics that veterans gain from their military experience can be game-changers for our communities. Veterans face obstacles in returning to civilian life and will need our help before they can help all of us yet again. The VETERANS’ GARDEN PROJECT’s mission is to enable and encourage the act of gardening for healing of mind, soul and body to all U.S. Veterans in Butte, Tehama and Glenn counties.
This will be the 4th Annual Veteran’s Day Plant Give-away by the VETERANS’ GARDEN PROJECT located at the BEC Humboldt Community Garden. Hundreds of plant starts have been grown in the Butte Creek Canyon greenhouse and will be given away FREE to any veteran and their families just for showing up. Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, lettuce and many more starts will be available for veterans to take home for gardening. No home garden? Veterans can join work groups at the garden and reap the harvest as well.
The VGP offers this plant give-away twice a year: once on Memorial Day and once on Veteran’s Day. Last year each event drew veterans from WWII to present day conflicts. It is heartwarming to see them the interactions among multi-generational participants.
The VETERANS’ GARDEN PROJECT is located in the BEC Humboldt Community Garden at Humboldt & El Monte Rds. – across the street from Marsh Junior High – in Chico, CA. The event will be held from 9 am – 12:00 pm. For more information contact Rosemary Febbo at (530)228-1308 – rose@roseskitchen.com or Michelle Angela – (530)588-2465 -veteransgardenproject@gmail.com
