What: Trades, Travel and Turkeys: How to Succeed in the Diverse World of Magazine Writing

A panel of three freelance authors who have achieved success as magazine writers will share their stories at Writers Forum on March 14.

John Higley is a prolific and nationally-recognized outdoor writer and photographer whose articles about fishing and hunting span a forty-two year career as a freelance writer. He began writing in his twenties with articles in Outdoor Life and Field and Stream. He continues to contribute articles, columns and photos regularly to print magazines, including California Game and Fish, Turkey Country Magazine,and Outdoor California (the magazine of the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife). He is a regular contributor to MyOutdoorBuddy.com, an online magazine. He is the author of three previous books, and currently has written a new hardback book titled Successful Turkey Hunting, published by Skyhorse Publishing in New York City. Higley is a long-time member of the Outdoor Writers Association of California (OWAC).

Troy Racki, DDS is a private practitioner in Redding, California. He graduated college with a BS in biology and completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University. Writing and personal finance are special interests of his. He pens financial pieces for the online investment site Seeking Alpha, for which he has received two Editor’s Choice Awards and three Professional Awards. He also writes for Horseplayers Magazine and Thoroughbred Times. He has has been a winner and a finalist in the Decipher Inc. National Writing Contest. Racki currently serves as Vice President of Writers Forum of Northern California.

Chloe Ryan Winston graduated from Marylhurst University and earned a master’s degree at Idaho State University. She has been a cruise destination lecturer as well as a high school teacher, counselor, and administrator. She has lived in Ashland, Oregon, which is featured in her writing, as well as Mexico, and has traveled extensively to fifty-eight countries. Winston has contributed to several blogs, and as a travel writer to publications including The Los Angeles Times, International Travel News, and Mature Lifestyles. She’s written nostalgia articles for Bend of the River and opinion columns for The Portland Oregonian and Redding Record Searchlight. Her book reviews occur regularly in theRecord Searchlight.
