Assault, Attempted Auto Theft at 99 Cent Store

On Friday, July 25, 2014 at approximately 6:14 PM, officers from the Redding Police Department responded to the “99 Cent Store” parking lot, located at 2611 Hilltop Drive for a reported assault in progress call.

Upon arrival, officers discovered Tami Grissom, 51 years old, of Redding, had left her vehicle running and unsecured. Brent Peterson, a 27 year old transient, saw the running vehicle and took the opportunity to steal it. As Peterson attempted to flee in her car, a citizen, Richard Alberg, 54 years old, of Redding, intervened and pulled Peterson out of the vehicle. During this incident, Grissom was struck by the vehicle as Peterson attempted to drive off. Alberg held Peterson until police arrived and arrested him.

Grissom’s injuries were minor and she did not seek immediate medical attention.

The Redding Police Department strongly encourages all citizens, while parking in public locations, to lock their vehicles and take their keys with them.

Peterson was booked into Shasta County Jail for auto-theft.
