On Thursday, July 24th, 2014, Redding Police Department Investigators arrested Nathan Robert Byers, 19 years of Redding, and Richard James Hiers, 22 years of Redding, for the murder of Claude Alexander Schmies, 48 years of Redding.
The original assault took place on July 20th, 2014 at approximately 12:49 A.M.. Byers and Hiers were both questioned shortly after the incident and released. As the investigation progressed, additional witnesses were located, as well as additional video surveillance footage. The 911 recording from the incident was also reviewed in its entirety. The call, which was approximately 25 minutes in length, assisted investigators in analyzing the surveillance video of the incident which was more than 30 minutes long. The additional evidence resulted in warrants being issued on July 24th, 2014, for the arrest of both Byers and Hiers.
Byers and Hiers were arrested in east Redding without incident. Both suspects were booked into the Shasta County Jail for the charge of murder. They are being held without bail.
