On Saturday, July 5, 2014, at 1719 hours, officers from the Redding Police Department responded to the 1200 block of Liberty Street in Redding regarding a suicidal subject armed with a shotgun. The Suspect who was subsequently shot by Redding Police Officers has been identified as Daniel Joseph Copeland. Copeland has been treated and released from the hospital.Copeland has been booked in the Shasta County Jail on the listed charges. Additionally, Detectives learned that prior to officer’s arrival, Copeland discharged the shotgun inside his residence to build up courage to shoot himself.

The Suspect was ultimately placed into handcuffs and was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital for treatment. The Suspect is in stable condition and has been talking with officers and detectives. No one else was injured during this incident. The six involved officers have been placed on paid Administrative Leave, pending an internal investigation, pursuant to Redding Police Department policy. The Shasta County Multi-Agency Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was initiated by the Redding Police Department. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation. The Redding Police Department and Shasta County District Attorney’s Office are assisting. The public can expect the Suspect identity to be released, early next week once Detectives/Investigators are able to complete the majority of their investigation.The involved officer’s names are being withheld at this time.
