RPD’s Halloween Safety Tips

The Redding Police Department would like to remind citizens of Redding to stay alert this year on Halloween.

Here are some tips to make your holiday safe:

• Do not approach houses with the lights turned off.

• Younger children should go out to trick-or-treat as early as possible (before dark), and an adult should always go with them.

• Instead of trick-or-treating in neighborhoods, consider going to a party or trick-or-treat at businesses or shopping centers.

• Wear a costume that makes it easy to walk, see, and be seen.

• Lighter colored costumes are easier for drivers of approaching cars to see.

• Carry a flashlight to see and be seen.

• Consider using make-up instead of wearing a mask. A mask may restrict your vision.

• If you are wearing a mask, take it off before crossing the street.

• Always cross the street at the corner, never mid-block or between parked cars.

• Walk on the sidewalk; if there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic along the edge of the road,  not in the roadway.

• Wait until you get home to eat your candy – and have mom or dad check it first.

• It is very tempting for children to eat candy while they are trick-or-treating. Parents may want to bring a bag or candy from home for their children to snack on while they are trick-or-treating.

• Throw away any opened or suspicious looking candy.

• Do not walk close to candles or jack-o-lanterns.

• Make sure children’s costumes are made of fire retardant material.

Have a safe Halloween!
