Car Theft Suspect in Critical Condition After Police Chase

CRIME/INCIDENT: Pursuit of Stolen Vehicle/Resisting Arrest

LOCATION: Rancho Rd. @ Alta Camino Dr., Redding

SUSPECT: White Male Adult; 33-year-old; (name not being released)

The afternoon of 10-05-13 at approximately 1430 hours, a Redding police officer attempted a traffic stop on a truck, which had been reported stolen. The driver of the stolen truck failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

The pursuit terminated when the driver of the stolen truck, while driving westbound on Rancho Road, failed to negotiate a right turn onto Alta Camino Drive. The truck drove through a brick wall and into the front yard of a residence on the northwest corner of that intersection. The driver of the stolen vehicle then fled from the scene on foot.

The pursuing officer exited his patrol car and gave chase. During the foot chase, the suspect was able to circle around, gain access to the patrol car and flee the scene in the stolen police car. An assisting officer was responding to the area and located the stolen police car a short distance away from the crash site. The suspect was seen fleeing from the stolen police car. This second officer began chasing the suspect on foot, through several back yards. The officer was finally able to catch the  suspect, who continued to resist arrest.

Additional officers arrived to assist in taking the resistant suspect into custody. As they struggled to do so, the suspect suddenly quit resisting and it was immediately realized the subject was not breathing. The officers quickly transitioned into life saving efforts, to include CPR. Officers continued CPR until an ambulance arrived on scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The Multi-Agency Critical Incident Protocol was activated and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office took lead in the investigation with assistance from the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. All involved officers from the Redding Police Department are on paid administrative leave and their names are being withheld at this time.

Additionally, the name of the suspect is also being withheld. Further information will be released as it becomes available. From Redding Police Department press release.
