Shasta County – About 100 community leaders (including anewscafe.com’s Doni Chamberlain) are ready to read to nearly 1200 young children at 61 locations all over Shasta County for the TAKE 10 AND DO IT AGAIN reading initiative on October 10, 2013 at 10 AM.
The effort is part of the Shasta Early Literacy Project (SELP), a collaborative of public and private agencies, school districts and service clubs focused on preparing more youngsters for kindergarten and for the learning process. SELP wants to reach young families and help build strong reading habits at home. Three years ago, SELP launched the Take 10 & Do It Again initiative to call attention to the importance of reading to young children every day for a total of at least 20 minutes.
Over 100 civic and business leaders will read to children for at least 10 minutes at 10 AM all over the county. Reading sites include Head Start centers, preschools, kindergartens, community medical centers and libraries. In addition, several school principals are asking older students to stop what they are doing and take 10 minutes to read.
Individuals or organizations that want to donate funds to buy the books or be a book distribution site may call the Shasta Library Foundation at 246-0146.
