RPD Arrest Parolee After Chase Through Shopping Center, Dana Drive

On December 23, 2012, at 10:46 am, officers from the Redding Police Department arrested a parolee (Mattos, Joseph Eugene, 46 years old) of Biggs Ca.

Sgt. Bart Langley attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 1998 Ford Escort in the area of Hilltop Drive and Dana Drive.

Mattos pulled into the Sears Parking Lot at the Mt. Shasta Mall and then fled through the parking lot in his vehicle. As Mattos fled eastbound in the Mt. Shasta parking lot, he rear-ended a car that was occupied. The 30-year-old Redding driver of the car that was hit sustained a minor injury.

Mattos then fled on foot and entered the JC Penny Store. While in the store, Mattos stole a jacket to disguise himself. Mattos then exited the JC Penny Store and fled on foot south bound on Churn Creek Road.

Numerous citizens assisted officers in locating Mattos. Officers were able to apprehend Mattos in the parking lot of the Red Robin Restaurant by utilizing batons and a taser.

Mattos was found in have over five pounds of marijuana and hashish in the trunk of his vehicle.

He was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine that was found in his clothing. Mattos also had an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Tehama County and on parole out of Butte County.

Mattos was arrested for resisting arrest, driving on a suspended driver’s license, burglary, hit and run, transportation of marijuana/hashish, outstanding warrant, parole violation and booked at the Shasta County Jail.
