Shasta College Sustainability Conference 2012 to feature two Major Films

The Shasta College Sustainability Conference 2012 will be screening films (with a discussion period to follow) of significant social importance on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:00 p.m., in Room 806. The film is entitled Mother: Caring for 7 Billion. This film breaks a 40-year taboo by bringing to light an issue that silently fuels our most pressing environmental, humanitarian and social crises – population growth. It is a critical time to talk about this subject as in 2011 the world’s population reached seven billion. At the same time, talking about population has become politically incorrect because of the sensitivity of the issues surrounding the topic– religion, economics, family planning and gender inequality. Yet it is an issue we cannot afford to ignore as one billion people still suffer from chronic hunger.

On Friday, April 27, at 1:00 p.m., in Room 806, the second film will be shown, followed by a student panel and discussion. This film is entitled Regeneration. This film takes an uncompromising look at the issues facing today’s youth and young adults, and the influences that perpetuate our culture’s apathetic approach to social and political causes. It examines our disconnection to nature, how much we consume, our loss of history, and the economic factors holding many of us back from becoming active community participants. It is a story of US.

This conference is sponsored by the Shasta College Science, Language Arts, and Math Division (SLAM) and the Shasta College Foundation. For more information, contact Shasta College English Instructor Pamela Spoto at 242-2248.
