Employees of the City of Redding and Shasta County have launched their annual “kettle contest,” ringing bells to raise money for the Salvation Army.
City Manager Kurt Starman and Supervisor Les Baugh kicked off the friendly competition on Monday, ringing bells at Walmart. In the weeks before Christmas, City and County employees can ring bells for their respective agencies in hopes of accumulating the greater total of donations. Last year, the City of Redding was the victor.
City and County employees have competed for the “bell-ringing hero trophy” each holiday season since 2005. The organization with the most donations at the end of the season is declared the winner. As they did last year, leaders of each agency added the personal challenge, going head-to-head and attempting to convince donors to choose sides.
Regardless of who wins the light-hearted competition, the real winners will be local residents who benefit from the assistance offered by the Salvation Army as a result of the traditional kettle drives.
