DUI Arrest Made in South Redding Collision

Ernak George Alexan Altankov

On October 5, 2011 at about 2:00 P.M. Redding Police Department officers responded to a three-vehicle traffic collision at the intersection of Highway 273 and Kenyon Drive. Based on a witness statement and physical evidence at the scene it was determined that a Chevy Suburban, driven by Ernak Altankov, 28 years of Redding, was northbound in the left-hand lane of Highway 273 when he drifted from his lane of travel and collided with a Buick Century, which was stopped on Highway 273 in the westbound turn lane for Kenyon Drive. The collision caused the Buick, driven by Cregg Zehnle, 68 years of Redding, to collide with a Dodge Caravan which also stopped in the turn lane for Kenyon Drive. The Dodge was driven by Daniel Pacheco, 33 years of Redding.

The collision pushed the Buick and Dodge approximately forty feet before they came to rest on their wheels. All vehicles sustained major damage. The collision closed the northbound lanes of Highway 273 for about one-and-a-half hours. Altankov was not injured in the collision; however, his two passengers, James Barnes, age 24 of Anderson, and Frederick Oshea 45 years of Anderson, were transported to Mercy Hospital for complaint of pain and minor injuries. Pacheco and his passenger, Cathy McNutt, 36 years of Redding, were also transported to Mercy Hospital for complaint of pain. Zehnle was also transported to Mercy Hospital for complaint of pain and minor injuries.

It was determined at the scene that Altankov was under the influence of drugs at the time of collision. Because there were injuries as a result of the collision, Altankov was arrested under the felony section for Driving Under the Influence and was subsequently booked at the Shasta County Jail.
