Shasta View-Old Alturas Intersection to Close for Roundabout Construction

Motorists are reminded that the intersection of Shasta View Drive and Old Alturas Road will be closed to all traffic from 7 p.m. Friday (August 19) to 6 a.m. Monday, August 29, while crews work to construct a roundabout.

Motorists are urged to plan alternate routes – generally from the north — to reach schools and other facilities on Shasta View during the closure period.

Construction of the roundabout requires a complete reconstruction of the intersection. The temporary closure will reduce overall congestion, and reduce the critical portion of the construction schedule by nearly five weeks. It also allows the contractor to avoid piecemeal construction, allowing for a higher quality product in the end.

Closure also will ensure a safer work zone for construction workers and the traveling public.

City crews will create a temporary three-way traffic stop at the intersection of Shasta View Drive and College View Drive to facilitate additional volume from the north. In addition, other adjustments to signals in the area will be made to accommodate additional traffic demands at key intersections. The traveling public is being asked to help by using alternative routes and avoiding peak travel times when traveling in the area. Motorists driving to Mountain View Middle School, Simpson University, or Redding School of the Arts should use Highway 299 East and College View or Old Oregon Trail to reach Shasta View Drive, and then commute south.

Mobile reader boards and the 1610 AM radio frequency are being used to inform the public of the closure and detour routes in the area. For additional information, call the Public Works Department at 225-4170.
