Redding Man Allegedly Resists Arrest After DUI Crash, 4 Year-Old Son OK

Hughes reportedly became combative when officers went to detain him.

On Friday, July 8, 2011, at 7:11 p.m., officers responded to the 3600 block of Churn Creek Road on the report of a single vehicle collision. Officers found that a white Oldsmobile sedan had left the road and crashed into a wall in front of the apartment complex. When officers attempted to meet with the driver of the car and investigate the collision, he threatened them. He became combative when officers tried to detain him. The officers used a takedown to restrain the driver, Brandon Gary Hughes, 42 years of Redding.

Hughes exhibited signs of intoxication. He was arrested for resisting officers (148(A)(1) PC)and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage (23152(A) VC). Hughes was taken to Shasta Regional Medical Center for a blood sample and medical clearance, before booking at the jail.

Officers found that Hughes’ son, 4 years of Redding, had been a passenger in the car. His son was not injured, but it was unclear whether he was in a car seat. Hughes was also charged with child endangerment (273A(A) PC).

Update: Jail records indicate Hughes faces an additional charge for driving with suspended license from a prior DUI (14601.2(A) VC).
