Every day as I’m going about my business, I cross from the east to the west side of Redding. I pass over the Sacramento River, one of our most valuable natural resources, without a thought. But the river and its watershed are a habitat for birds and fish, provide a highway for spawning salmon and irrigate our thirsty farms. Let’s show the river a little love.
You can this weekend. Get Outta Town to the Sacramento River Discovery Center in Red Bluff for a day of education and activities at the Watershed Celebration and Plant Sale. Activities include a 5-and 10-K run, games, crafts and entertainment.
The Discovery Center website describes the celebration this way: Free family event with activities and information about the Sacramento River Watershed for all ages. Native and drought-tolerant plant sale. Informational booths, demonstrations, garden and bird walks, boat rides, arts and crafts booths, food and silent auction. Plants are just $5 a pot. Proceeds benefit the Sacramento River Discovery Center Intern Garden Program.
The Sacramento River Discovery Center uses educational displays and exhibits, hands-on instructional programs, watershed rehabilitation opportunities and other means to enhance the public’s understanding, appreciation, wise use, and stewardship of resources that make up the Sacramento River watershed. The Sacramento River Discovery Center is about people working together to make the world a better place, about optimizing partnerships to maximize return on investments, and about addressing needs of education, business, and local and regional environments in a colloborative endeavor. Forty-eight education, government, and private groups provide the foundation for the synergy of this effort.
