CASE # 11-6400

CRIME/INCIDENT: Overdue Subject Search and Rescue

LOCATION: McCandless Gulch off Big Backbone Rd.

VICTIM(S): Bob Fogel, 37 years old

Monty Combs, 52 years old
Shasta County Resident

On 02/27/11 at approximately 1900 hours the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office was notified by a citizen
regarding two overdue subjects in the McCandless Gulch area. The subjects were out retrieving hunting
dogs, at which time one of the individuals started having medical issues such as cramping and fatiguing.

A cell phone call was received by the above citizen requesting Search and Rescue to respond due to the
weather, the terrain, darkness and the possible medical condition of one of the subjects. A search and
rescue effort was conducted involving members of the Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Unit,
volunteers, Reach Medical Helicopter and the California Highway Patrol. The subjects were located by
helicopter but rescue workers were unable to extract them immediately due to the terrain. Searchers on
foot and quads reached the subjects on a four-wheel drive road in McCandless Gulch. They contacted
both subjects and subject number one was able to walk out with rescue workers. Rescue workers provided
dry clothing and food and stayed the night with subject two.

Shortly after day break, with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol helicopter, the second subject was taken to Mercy Hospital for medical evaluation and released. Both subjects are in good condition and the Sheriff’s Office would like to thank allied agencies for their assistance.
