Smiling Spring & the March Calendar of Regional Gardening

Ahhh, what the Sufi poet Rumi called “Smiling Spring” is upon us – in all her mystery. Like falling in love, spring makes us gardeners both ecstatic and yet restless/agitated. Some of the year’s sweetest and yet most ephemeral blossoms and fruits breeze in and out of our days – wintersweet and witch hazel, the early sweet violets, and winter honeysuckle, asparagus and the tenderest of greens and pea shoots…hmmm.

But gardeners and plant lovers, try to settle yourselves – each of your favorites will come in time. Be still if you can and listen — enjoy each moment fully as it unfolds — there will be time.

It’s called Spring fever for good reason.

Weather is often teasingly erratic in March and temperatures will soar to summer heights and dip down to dangerous levels as well. Pay close attention to your seedlings and starts, and to tender growth on established plants as well. Last average frost dates are generally close to the beginning of April for most of the Valley, and a ways beyond that for much of high country, but each week I get word about some of our higher elevation independent nurseries re-opening for the season, which is always a nice sign of spring in the North State. Trinity Nursery in Weaverville opened for the season in February. Native Grounds and Spring Hill Nursery and Gardens in Mt. Shasta should both be in full swing by the end of the month.

Where ground is workable and when weather permits, this month is a good time to plant summer blooming bulbs and finish planting any bare-root trees, shrubs or vines. You can also plant your seed potatoes and hardy vegetable starts such as broccoli, collards and kale. Try not to overwork or walk on very wet ground, as you will compact it and damage its structure for the season. For more information on what to do in your garden this time of year, visit your local teaching garden, botanical garden, gardening or plant society, or independent nursery or call your local master gardeners — they will point you in the right direction. If you are looking for resources such as these in your area, please visit my the Links and Resources at Jewellgarden.com, or scroll through the many monthly events listings below.

There is a feverish pitch to the monthly calendar of gardening events as well – spring flower shows and plant sales are starting to heat up. If you are interested in our regional events, be sure to check the On-line Calendar of Regional Gardening Events at jewellgarden.com regularly – events are added all the time. I do my very best to keep the calendar up to date and accurate; please confirm all events with the event host’s contact information. If you have an event you would like listed or if you are aware of a mistake on my calendar, please send me corrected info: Jennifer@jewellgarden.com! Thanks.
