Weekend Offers More Than Football On TV

The second weekend of the new year offers no holiday, no three-day weekend and, you might think, not much to do except sit around and watch football. Wrong.

There’s plenty of activities and attractions on this weekend’s calendar, including things to help you meet your New Year’s weight-loss resolution and things that won’t. So here goes:

• Some like it hot, and some like it cold … The Frosty Fun Runs series starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday, January 8, at Lake Redding Park with your choice of 4.3- and 2-mile race courses on the bike path by the Sacramento River. Rain, shine, sleet or hail, the series of races continues at various locations around Redding nearly every Saturday through March 5. No advance registration is required. http://www.sweatrc.com/sounds/Frosty_2011.pdf

• No reason to be crabby … Not when the Anderson Rotary Club crab feed offers all the crab, chowder, salad and bread you can eat. The fundraiser for the Rotary Club’s scholarship fund is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday inside Lassen Hall at the Shasta District Fairgrounds. Tickets are $35 and will be available at the door. Call 355-9052 for details. And bring your crackers!

• If a crab frenzy isn’t your thing, there’s the first ArtHop of the year from 6 to 9 a.m. in downtown Redding. Or how about this two-fer? Get your fill of crab at the fairgrounds and then head north 10 miles for the ArtHop After Party, which gets started at about 9 p.m. at Vintage Wine Bar on Market Street.

• After all the crab, vino and who knows what else on Saturday night, you can work off some calories during the last cyclocross race in the Ride On series at 10 a.m. Sunday, January 9, at Forward Park in Red Bluff. Located off Monroe Street a bit north of downtown, Forward Park offers a great course for cyclocross zanies. Not sure what cyclocross is? Bring a beater mountain bike, clothes that can get muddy, a sense of humor and $15, and you’ll find out.

• Or maybe you want to just start getting in line to see the San Francisco Giants’ World Series trophy, which is scheduled to make a tour stop in Redding from 4 to 6 p.m. next Monday, January 10, at the Big League Dreams sports park pavilion. No, you won’t be able to parade around the room with the trophy raised, but you can take your picture with it during the free event. Trophy stops elsewhere have drawn big crowds so, seriously, don’t show up at the last minute.
