The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators is the international organization of authors and illustrators which many in the children’s writing industry consider an essential professional association for those creating content for children. The association helps educate, advocate for and provide a networking forum for authors, illustrators, agents, editors and a variety of others involved in making books for children and young adults. The organization is divided into regions run by regional advisors. The closest advisors to Shasta County are located in Sacramento. They have recognized Shasta County as an area of talent and will be holding the first SCBWI workshop in this area on October 2nd.

9:00 – 10:15 am Meet – Inspire – Plan
Co-RAs Patricia Newman and Erin Dealey talk briefly about their paths to publication by way of introduction, and then recap the SCBWI LA conference with SCBWI member Jamie Weil with important tidbits; bits of inspiration from award-winning authors and illustrators; what’s hot, what’s not–straight from editors and agents at the LA conference.

Next on the agenda–LISTENING! Talk to Shasta-area members to find out how the LA trends/info relate to members’ needs.

10:15-10:45 Break-schmoozing, sharing, snack, informal Q&A

10:45-12:00 Finding Your Voice: A fun, hands-on writing session where participants will produce a few paragraphs to share at the end of the session. Examples from current literature are also used.
