The trains are back at Dunsmuir’s Railroad Days! Highlights include a 1948 Western Pacific “Silver Plate” dining car. Western Pacific’s 841 “Silver Plate” dining car built by Budd Company. The “Silver Plate” is one of two owned by Western Pacific. All six that were built survived until the end of service in 1971.

The car ran in the middle of the train, leading the sleepers and observation car. It trailed the dome-lounge car, which was intended to work together with the diner.

The dining area seats a maximum of 48 in a four-person-per-table configuration. In slower seasons, some tables were substituted for shorter tables seating only two people, for a maximum of 40 places. The “SIlver Plate” is still substantially intact, with most of its original interior fixtures and furniture and nearly all of its original kitchen in place.
