Dogwood Daze of Dunsmuir to Bloom Saturday

What: Dogwood Daze of Dunsmuir

When: May 29

Where: Dusmuir

The Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce announces a new event for Dunsmuir to be held Memorial Day weekend in conjunction with the Dunsmuir Garden Club’s annual Flower Show and Garden Tour. Dogwood Daze of Dunsmuir will celebrate the planting of more than 52 dogwood trees on Sacramento and Dunsmuir Avenues, Hedge Creek Falls and the Children’s Park. Many of them should be in vivid bloom that weekend, with colors ranging from white to pink to salmon to dark rose. The dogwood planting originated with Cindy Foreman, owner of the Brown Trout, who planted four trees in memory of her parents and her husband’s. The idea blossomed from there with many more people planting trees in memory of loved ones. “It should be a beautiful weekend where everyone can see his or her tree and be reminded of loved ones,” said Cindy. “We hope many folks will be attracted to our beautiful little town that weekend.”

Merchants will be urged to hold sidewalk sales and offer special attractions in costumes of Dogpatch. And the ever popular city-wide yard sale will run from Friday through Monday.

New events, in addition to the dogwood tree drives, will include a Botanical Garden tour , a doggie parade and pet adoption sponsored by the Siskiyou County Humane Society, and a Pie Social sponsored by the Railroad Depot Society.

Tri-tip sandwiches will be available at the Babe Ruth Memorial Ballpark and cooked by Robert Wallace of the Brown Trout. Dunsmuir High School will hold a Sadie Hawkins race in the ballpark along with a Marriage Booth. Everyone will be urged to wear Dogpatch costumes of Daisy Mae and Lil’ Abner. A kids’ costume contest will be run by the Kids’ Factory.

Later in the day a prime-rib street dinner will be held on Sacramento Avenue by the Brown Trout. Wine and beer will also be available and there will be local music.

A map of the event locations will be printed by the Chamber, and yard sales will be listed for only $10. Garden Tour tickets will be sold at the Flower Show located in the Community Building. All events will be held Saturday, May 29, 2010. Yard sales and merchant offerings will last the entire weekend.

For information and to list your yard sale location, call Denise Bailey, Chamber Office Manager, at 235-2177. Dogwood Committee members in addition to Cindy Foreman are Cheryl Petty of Window Box Nursery, Linda Price of the Boxcar Gallery, and Barbara Cross from the Dunsmuir Chamber of Commerce.
