When: May 8, 5 p.m.

Where: Brandy Creek

The Friends of Whiskeytown (FOW) is raising funds at its Brandy Creek Beach Luau annual fundraiser to hire college students to build trails. FOW is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving visitors’ experience at Whiskeytown National Recreational Area. Some projects supported by FOW include: Trail improvements such as bridges, benches, picnic tables and vista points, Waterfall Week Celebration, Free Kayak Program, Artist-in-Residence program and Special Art Events, Pick Up Lake Litter Day (PULL), Sponsorship of Student Conservation Association Workers, and Christmas at the Camden House.

The Brandy Creek Beach Luau is being held at Brandy Creek Beach Saturday, May 8th, at 5 pm. The Luau will feature a cocktail hour, Hawaiian food, authentic Hawaiian entertainment with hula dancers and tiki torches, and live and silent auctions. Live auction items include an overnight stay in San Francisco at Del Sol accompanied by a coveted superintendent’s tour of Alcatraz Island’, an overnight stay on Angel Island, a three-day houseboat vacation on Trinity Lake, dinner for 20 at Elements restaurant, and many more items. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at Kent’s Meats and Groceries, Crown Camera, Sunset Marketplace, and the Visitor’s Center at Whiskeytown.

Funds raised will be used to hire college students through the NPS program called Student Conservation Association. College students submit applications through the NPS in a competitive process to spend nine weeks of their summer blazing trails in the National Parks. Last year Whiskeytown NPS, in partnership with FOW, hired sixteen college students to blaze five miles of the Shasta Trinity Trail, completing the section that runs through the park. This is a monumental addition to the park’s trail system, which draws substantial attention from trail-goers across the western seaboard. The Shasta Trinity Trail stretches 100 miles and connects the Sacramento River Trail in Redding to the Pacific Crest Trail in the Trinity Alps.
